Can English Bulldog Puppies Swim?

There are many different answers to this question with different reasons for each answer. While English Bulldog puppies may not be kings of the water like Labrador Retrievers, you can always teach your dog new tricks!

The problem with your English Bulldog puppy French bulldog puppies for adoption and  water is his legs and breathing. They have short, stout builds with short, stubby legs to match. While their legs are usually very strong and muscular, they are not very long which makes for a more difficult doggie paddle than other breeds. Some believe they cannot move their legs fast enough to support the density of their body. This could be true – most of them are very heavy and very muscular which makes their little legs work that much harder.

Another problem with your English Bulldog puppy swimming is his breathing. Many of them have breathing issues because of their smashed in muzzles. This makes breathing a harder task than dogs with extended noses. When in the water, they cannot lift their heads high enough to keep the water out of their mouth and nose. This makes the difficult task of the doggie paddle even more exhausting.

We’re not saying that English Bulldog puppies cannot swim – it just becomes a hard task than it is for other breeds. A quick dip in the pool or lake is a great way to cool off in the hot summer weather, which is important since this Bulldogs can overheat very easily.

If you’d like to teach your English Bulldog puppy to swim, try getting him a life preserver made specifically for their breed. This will give them the extra support he needs in the water and allow you to let your guard down a bit more without worrying about him sinking right to the bottom.

Try holding your pup in the water under his chest so that he can move his legs be himself and get used to motions needed to swim. Most dogs inherently know how to swim and will automatically move their legs appropriately. If your English Bulldog puppy does not do this, just allow him to float in your arms and enjoy the cool water. We don’t think any hot dog will resist that!
